Estancia Don José - Guenguel Project

This friendly ranch is near the town of Río Mayo in the southwestern part of the province of Chubut (Argentina).

One of the ranch’s biggest attractions is the opportunity to get to know the "Guenguel Project" for sustained, sustainable production of guanaco fiber.

The guanaco (Lama guanicoe) is one of the South American camelid species most characteristic of Argentina’s far south.

Its coat, relatively short and fine-haired, is similar to wool.

The guanaco is wild by nature, but can be domesticated.

At present, guanaco-hair fiber is used to make coats, jackets and bedspreads. Its fiber has a very high yield, making it possible to manufacture high-quality garments.

It is a very promising resource with a strong demand from the textile industries of the countries that traditionally produce garments made of fine fibers, special fibers or precious fibers.

The Don José ranch will fill you in on this project by taking you around the farm, showing you videos and explaining how the animals are raised and how guanaco fiber is produced and made into high-quality garments.
