Whales season in Valdés Península

close

From June to December every year, thousands of people from around the world flock to the Valdés Peninsula on the Chubut coast in Argentina to live an incredible and unforgettable experience: watching majestic southern right whales from boats.

These gigantic visitors, which can weigh as much as 55 tons and be as long as 16 meters in adulthood, offer an imposing spectacle as they fall back into the water after their imposing leaps.
At present the peninsula is part of a conservation program for the native species to which it offers the necessary tranquility to breed. That is why every year some 600 individuals of this whale species (20 percent of the world population) go there before beginning their migration to their feeding grounds.

The whale-sighting cruises that leave from the village of Puerto Pirámides on the Valdés Peninsula last about an hour, depending on how close the whales are to the port. Once the whales are located, the small boats keep a prudent distance. And then it is the curious whales that do the sighting, in some cases passing beneath the craft, from which they can be easily observed and photographed thanks to the absolute transparency of the water.

Another big attraction is the southern elephant seal, which is found around Antarctica and as far north as the Valdés Peninsula, the specie’s only continental breeding ground.
