Activities and Excursions

Horseback rides:
We ride through forests and valleys on the ranch where it is easy to see local wildlife such as grey foxes, hares, and birds like ibises, geese, ducks and eagles, among others.

The rides take us to different panoramic lookout points from which we enjoy the immensity of the Patagonian landscape and its contrast with the Andean range.

Walk around the house:
You can walk around the main house, looking at the cattle, the old shearing shed (the only building left from the ranch’s beginnings at the turn of the last century) and a locomotive-shaped steam boiler that powered the sawmill in the old days.

Hike to El Mentiroso:
After a short trip in a 4WD to the foot of the Andean foothills, he hike through a forest of low- and high-beeches, looking at the birds in the trees. Leaving the forest, we drive up to the El Mentiroso Plateau for a marvelous panoramic view of one of the tributaries of the Stag River and Puerto Natales Bay in Chile.

Hike along the Stag River:
We follow the bank of the Stag River, looking at the birdlife and the sub-Andean vegetation. Arriving at the confluence of the two tributaries that form the headwaters of the Stag River, we see condor nests in a cliff.

Fishing excursion:
We will go to neighboring ranches whose owners have given us permission to fish in the rivers that flow through their property. These rivers – the Gallegos, Rubens and Penitente – are home to resident brown and rainbow trout as well as the famed sea-run brown trout. A picnic or barbecue lunch on the river bank is included in the excursion, from which we return to the ranch late in the afternoon.

Excursion to Torres del Paine National Park (Chile):
Leaving Stag River early in the morning, we drive over the Cancha Carrera-Cerro Castillo pass into Chile. We go to Lake Grey and walk the lakeshore looking at the glacier. Leaving the park, we pass pass the Chico and Grande falls, as well as the falls of the Paine River, which flows from the lake of the same name. We return to the ranch through the same border pass in the late afternoon.

Excursion to Puerto Natales and the Mylodon Cave:
Our first stop is the Miner’s Museum in the coal mining town of Río Turbio. We enter Chile through the Mina Uno-Dorotea pass, arriving at Puerto Natales for lunch. In the afternoon we will see the Mylodon Cave, returning to Stag River through the Casas Viejas-La Laurita pass.

Stag River has a comfortable guest house with four rooms with private bath, a living room and a barbecue shed.

The horseback rides and hikes done on the ranch have no special physical or age requisites.
