Rides and hikes
El Florentino:
Duration: 1 to 2 hours.
Easy to medium difficulty.
A short excursion through woodland-covered moraines and a canyon south of the main house,
where there are sheltered areas in case of bad weather. We come out on the Florentino
Lagoon along a cattle trail in a rolling clearing. Nearby is a forest glade where we can
have a rest and a snack while looking at the lagoon. The lagoon is the livestocks watering
hole and the habitat of many water birds, so it is ideal for learning about ranch work and
the habits of birdlife in lagoons and glacial landscapes.
Monte:
Duration: 2 to 3 hours.
Easy to medium difficulty.
Most of this excursion is through a wooded canyon between 750 and 1,000 meters above sea
level, with a stream in the valley. A narrow trail goes from the main house through the
canyon toward the mountains. It takes us to a rosary of lagoons joined by a rudimentary
path used to bring in firewood. The trail is good on windy days with scattered showers for
the shelter afforded by the canyon and trees.
Native
vegetation and the sound of water are ever-present on this circuit, which is ideal for
interpretation of a forest environment rich in lichen-festooned Nothofagus species,
in which woodpeckers and small birds of prey are numerous.
Mayo River:
Easy.
A short excursion to the bridge and river across a gently terraced grassland 700 meters
above sea level. The river is easy to get to and ideal for sport fishing. You can get your
bearings from the sheds and the main house. The sloping sandy river banks are easy to walk
on, and there is abundant birdlife.
Cerro
Colorado:
Medium difficulty.
From the top of a hill of volcanic origin over 700 meters above sea level, about 800
meters east of the house, you can see the entire ranch, the river winding through it and,
as a backdrop, the Andes on the border with Chile.
Forest and
Chalía summer pasture:
Duration: 5 to 7 hours.
Medium difficulty.
On the way up through the high- and low-beech forest covering the mountainside to 1,200
meters above sea level are various lookout points with views of the Chalía plateau,
canyons and the winter pasture.
La Horqueta:
Easy. You are driven there to explore an area of dense native forest at the mouth of a
rocky stream, and see the corrals and buildings. |
