Activities and Excursions

Excursions
Guided tour of the Lively Museum:
You will find out where the area’s first settlers came from more than 100 years ago, and see several of the objects and utensils they used, photographs, periodicals, and diaries written by the first pioneer, Joseph Lively.

Piedras Blancas and Mirador del Monte lookout points:
You can hike or ride a horse up to these lookout points, which offer beautiful views of Lake San Martín and its surroundings.

The lake and yards:
Very near the main house is a little fine-sand beach that is sheltered from the wind – a good place to rest and sunbathe.
Continuing on down the main road, you come to the yards and shed of La Sección, where the ranch’s sheep are penned, dipped and shorn. You can join in the work, and will have the unique opportunity to accompany a sheep drive and observe first-hand how sheep dogs work the flock.

Elena River (cascade and bridge):
You can walk all the way there, or drive part way and walk the rest. The Elena River drops in an imposing cascade more than 20 meters high, and there is a bridge built with old carts to help the sheep cross the river.
The rapids in this part of the river provide a natural habitat for showy torrent ducks.

Medialuna meadow:
Duration: 2 to 4 hours.
This hike near the inn goes around Mount Moreno, passing through the Medialuna meadow, a green area with trees and abundant birdlife.

Paso Alto and the Talca Lagoon:
Duration: 4 to 6 hours.
A hike to lovely lookout points and the Talca Lagoon at the foot of the imposing walls of Mount Condorera.

Mount Condorera:
Duration: 6 to 7 hours.
It takes some effort to hike to the top of Mount Condorera (1,499 meters), but it is not overly difficult. It is a full-day excursion, so you have to take a box lunch and water. From the top you have beautiful views of Lake San Martín and the Andes, as well as a close look at the condors that often fly over the area.
Most of the walk is through a dense high-beech forest.

Mount Astillado:
Duration: 6 to 8 hours.
This horseback ride takes you through a high-beech forest and an extensive lowland area that gets lower in the meadows of the Elena River at the foot of Mount Astillado, a summer sheep pasture where there are low-flying condors. We leave the horses and climb to one of the crests of the mountain to enjoy a view of the Andes that includes the peaks of mounts Fitz Roy and Torre.
This excursion can also be done in 2 or 3 days of trekking.

Maipú Peninsula:
Duration: 6 to 8 hours.
This can be done on horseback, overlanding, cycling or on foot. On the peninsula there are two shepherds’ outposts: Puesto del Medio and Puesto Adentro.
From Puesto Adentro you have a view of Doble Island and Lake San Martín to the west, with the Andes in the background.

Petrified Palm:
Duration: 7 to 8 hours.
We leave the inn in the morning and arrive at Barranca Alta, where an enormous petrified palm trunk 20 meters long emerges from the rocky soil amid thousands of petrified slivers. From here we have a panoramic view of the waters of Lake San Martín, which contrast with the Maipú and Chacabuco peninsulas. In the distance are mounts Morro and Bach Aike and Lake Tar. Mounts Pana, Astillado and Iglesia are also visible. You will probably see flow-flying condors and herds of guanacos as well.

This ranch lies right up against the Andes facing the turquoise waters of Lake San Martín 280 km from El Calafate and the Perito Moreno glacier in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz.

On the ranch, which has belonged to the Leyenda family for more than half a century, guests can hike in beech forests, go on horseback rides, watch birds (especially condors), take part in ranch work and visit a museum dedicated to the Patagonian pioneers.
